One Touch Switching: A Simplified Approach to Broadband Changes
A significant development for UK broadband consumers occurred on September 12, 2024, with the introduction of One Touch Switching. This new process aims to streamline the often-complex process of switching broadband providers, making it more accessible to the 41% who previously expressed reluctance due to the hassle involved.
All fixed landline and broadband service providers were obligated to implement One Touch Switching by this date. Designed to expedite the switching process, it eliminates the need for customers to directly contact their current provider. Unfortunately, some providers failed to meet this deadline, prompting OFCOM to launch an enforcement program to ensure timely and high-quality implementation.
While One Touch Switching is now available to most customers, there remains a concerning number of individuals who are still unable to benefit from this simplified process. Providers are required to adhere to specific OFCOM conditions and must take immediate action to extend One Touch Switching to all customers as soon as possible. OFCOM expects a rapid increase in the proportion of customers who can switch using this method.
The largest providers, including BT, Sky, VMO2, and TalkTalk, will be required to provide explanations for any delays in the full implementation of One Touch Switching. If these explanations are deemed unsatisfactory, or if other information suggests inadequate preparation, OFCOM will initiate investigations to hold these providers accountable.
With UW, this is done at the time of sign up, making it a smooth process for the customer. Before the end of this process UW would have automatically contacted the current provider. All the necessary cancellation details will be automatically be sent to that customer, such as contract end date and any early termination fees.
